Mini Dog Birthday Cake

Dog Birthday Cake

Are you looking for a special T-R-E-A-T for your fur baby’s next birthday? This Mini Dog Birthday Cake is easy to make and fewer ingredients.

Mini Dog Birthday Cake

I first made this mini dog birthday cake when my dog Cooper was turning three and it was a hit.  He loves it so much, he still wags his tail every time I make it for him years later. I made other recipes in the past, but noticed he would only eat the frosting, not the cake itself. So I kept the ingredients simple.

Mini Dog Birthday Cake

Every time I make this mini dog birthday cake, I’m reminded of homemade cornbread. And it’s smells so good, I was even curious and tried it too before giving it to him the first time. All in all, it tastes like a sugarless cake. The only part containing sugar is the sprinkles themselves. You can find sellers that make pet friendly sprinkles, but standard sprinkles from the market are also fine in moderation. The sprinkles in this photo were purchased from a cake expo I visited in San Diego, but it I hate that I can’t remember the vendor that sold them too me. If I happen to find to track it down, I will update this post!

Dog Birthday Cake

This mini dog birthday cake can also be turned into cupcakes if preferred. To make them, place liners in a cupcake pan and fill 3/4 of the liner. Bake them for 15-18 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean in the center.

      • Erica says:

What kind of sprinkles did you use?

        • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

          Hi Erica,

I use dog friendly sprinkles purchased online. Etsy provides a nice variety of dog friendly options! I sometimes see others use regular rainbow sprinkles but I would make sure it doesn’t contain chocolate, artificial sweetener, and only use a tiny amount or it could upset your dog’s tummy.
          I hope this helps!

I’m making the cake right now and is it ok if I use Greek gods yogurt my Dog’s birthday is today she’s turning 13 and I want to make it special and I don’t have low-fat yogurt so I’m using another kind of yogurt? Is that OK I’m not sure

        • dorinda bradshaw says:

I put Sweet Baby Rays jerky in the food chopper and made sprinkles !

        • Natalie Tudor says:

Would coconut milk yogurt work for the frosting?

      • Alexandra says:

Can you also use crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy?

    • Aryn says:

Is the frosting mix 1/2 cup yogurt and 1/4 cup yogurt?

    • Zali says:

Is it ok to do it without yogurt? Any substitutes ?

      • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

The yogurt is part of the frosting but it can be taken out and you can just use the peanut butter to frost the cake.

So Zeke turned 1 today and for the first time, I baked a doggy’s cake. Zeke didn’t leave my side the whole time during baking. I followed the recipe to the T and it turned out delicious. Zeke simply looooves the cake. Tastes amazing to us too. Thank you for the delicious recipe. This is our new go-to cake for Zeke

Just made this for my dogs 10th Birthday. It’s the first time I’ve ever made him a cake and he absolutely loved it.

      • Kristen says:

Made this for my 14 yo Jack Russell’s birthday. I’ve never done cake for her on her birthday so figured it was about time. I did refrigerate because of the yogurt in the frosting but wasn’t 100% sure. I also inadvertently doubled the yogurt but seems fine. Daisy scarfed it right up.

  2. Sue McGee says:

Can I substitute wheat flour for white?

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

      Hi Sue,

Of course! If using only whole wheat flour, I recommend using less than all-purpose because whole wheat flour is more dense and can make the cake dry. Try substituting 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour rather than 1 cup of all-purpose.
You could also sift the whole wheat flour to introduce more air into the batter to help make the cake lighter.
      I hope this helps!

    • Kelsey Hockenberry says:

Did you substitute whole wheat? If so, did it turn out well?

  3. Anonymous says:

    Hi,
I made it for my dog Puk’s 10th birthday today and she really, really loved it! She is normally a very relaxed eater, but with this cake she ran off (afraid we would change our mind I guess) and ate it all. It’s now about 10 minutes later and she is still searching if there are any crumbs left on the floor. Great recipe!

  4. Samantha says:

Just finished making this for my dog he LOVED it! I added a bit of food coloring for the frosting, will definitely be making this for dog birthdays now instead of spending a ton at a dog bakery. Thank you 🙂

  5. Shannon L Hammagren says:

Ok I dont normally comment on reciepes but this is my one exception….I made a double batch as we have 4 dogs in the house and our Vizsla was born 12/30 so we wanted a dog cake for her birthday. I had done xmas baking and they would come in the kitchen then leave but when I made these they lined up as I was mixing it like they knew it was for them! They demanded to lick the bowl which was fun in itself. I made cupcakes so it would be easier to give them all thier own. I should have cut them up they grabbed it and were off and running and gulping it down at the same time. To say they loved them is an understatement! So glad to find this recipe!

  6. Bailey says:

Can I use something other than yogurt for icing ?

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

      Hi Bailey,

Of course! You could try substituting with applesauce, honey, mashed pumpkin puree, mashed banana, coconut oil or just the peanut butter alone. I hope this helps!

Tomorrow, January 3rd 2021, is my pup’s first birthday- I will be making this for him (minus the yogurt as I don’t have any)- many of the recipes I looked at had apple as a primary ingredient and unfortunately apple upsets his tummy, or otherwise they had essential ingredients I don’t have on hand- THANKS so much for providing a recipe that uses common (and delicious) ingredients that my pup will love

  7. Kim Black says:

Made this tonight! My boy turned 6!! He and is brothers LOVED IT!!

  8. Laura says:

can something like rice flour be used as my pup has allergies?

  9. Anonymous says:

  10. Lacey Bustos says:

    Hello there,
I was just curious if i can substitute regular flour for coconut palm flour?

  11. Sammi says:

Can this be stored just setting out on the counter or should I put it in the refrigerator? I made it today but my dogs birthday is not until tomorrow.

  12. Anonymous says:

My dogs loved this birthday cake and it was so easy!

  13. Reilly says:

What did you cook it in?!

  14. Samantha says:

is this able to be made a day ahead of time and just keep in fridge??

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

      Hi Samantha,

You can definitely make the cake a day before and store in the fridge!

      • Alex says:

Made this today for my pups first birthday! I also chopped some baby carrots and added them in. I used wheat flour and after read about the dense-ness that may make it dry, but I’m hoping the water in the carrots will help with this. It’s currently in the oven but I’m sure she will love it! Super easy and the “frosting” is actually delicious. I used plain greek yogurt so it was a little thicker. I might mix that up once and a while for a sweet treat for myself! Lol

  15. Finja says:

Do you think I could substitute the peanut butter with normal butter?

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

You could try the substitution but there could be a difference in the cake result. Butter could also give your fury friend indigestion and not recommended to give to them, especially if lactose intolerant.
You could try another food spread or puree that you know your puppy would enjoy such as mashed sweet potato or pumpkin!

  16. Alexandra says:

I absolutely love you dog cake recipe my dogs loved it this is my second time using your recipe because it’s one if my dogs birthday💚

  17. Misty Wilson says:

My baby girl turned 11 today and I made her this cake. She normally doesn’t like the ones I buy at pet stores. She absolutely LOVED this cake!! 18. Leslie Dunn says:

Hi! I’ve just made this for my Dachshund’s birthday tomorrow. But now I’m in the predicament of how to store it correctly over night? Hoping this is answered before I got to bed (Im in the UK). I should add I’ve already frosted the cake. Thank you!!!

  23. Will Strutters says:

I made this for my little Chester’s first birthday. I didn’t have any banana, so I used 1/4 a cup of pumpkin puree, which worked fine. He loved it! He was a little timid to take a bite, after having licked off all the frosting, but after I cut it into quarters he gobbled down half before he was full. For sprinkles,I crushed some of Chester’s crunchy treats and sprinkled then over the top.

  24. Kate Barrett says:

Making this for my dogs sweet sixteen! Thank you for the recipe 🙂

  25. Ashley Galindo says:

Hi, I’m making this for my pup tomorrow she turns one! Do you think if I use coconut flour it will be too dense? Should I use less than I cup ? Or maybe add more moisture? Help please! 🙂

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

      Hi Ashley,

I would try with about 1/4-1/3 cup flour to make it less dense. Hopefully this helps!

  26. You Hang says:

Is it okay if we use baking powder instead of baking soda?

    • thedishnextdoor Staff says:

Yes, but you may need to use about 1- 1/2 tsp. baking powder because it’s not as strong as baking soda. I hope this helps!

      • Tasia says:

Hello I want to makesure if I subtitute baking soda with baking powder, it need 1 1/2 tsp (one and a half teaspoon) is it right?

    Dear Nicole,
I’m planning to make my first ever pupcake, and was wondering if oat flour (blitzed oats) could be used in place of half of the plain flour? If so, would the quantity of oat flour have to be tweaked (i.e. 1/2 cup plain flour + 2/3 cups oat flour)? Thanks very much in advance.

  48. Tara B says:

My 11 year old boxer and her bestie loved this cake! I tasted both the cake and icing. I have to say the icing was absolutely delicious. I wish I tasted them both together. It turned out so good the humans couldn’t wait to try it too! (Only sprinkled treats on half). Too bad I couldn’t post a pick or lil video of my lil birthday girl enjoying it so much!

Is food coloring safe to put in the frosting? Also, what are some other colored sprinkle substitutes?

    • thedishnextdoor says:

If the food coloring is FDA approved, it should be okay to add to the frosting. For the sprinkles, some sellers such as etsy provide pet friendly sprinkles, or using the standard store bought sprinkles work great too in moderation. Hope this helps!

Hi, would it be ok to use coconut flour?
